Goal

Rooted in growing food, we cultivate nourishing environments that support health, economic development, healing and creativity through urban agriculture. Urban Growers Collective tackles food insecurity through a variety of programming. Our portfolio of programs includes: the Fresh Moves Mobile Market; Farmers for Chicago, our job readiness program which trains over 300 teens annually, 30 formerly incarcerated adults through an 18-month job-readiness program, as well as our Incubator Farmer program which provides land and technical assistance for new Chicago farmers; our head-start preschool farm which serves over 150 preschoolers and their families; and finally, we provide education to a larger audience through a series of agriculture, small business development, and equality building workshops.

Why we’re participating in the Race Against Gun Violence:

Urban Growers Collective works in communities that have been impacted by gun violence. Many of our youth and their families have been victimized by this trauma, either on a personal or familial level. We incorporate healing and fitness as a core value of our organization’s work and building collective power with other organizations that are combating poverty and violence. Participating in the walk is both an opportunity to stand in solidarity while also embracing fitness as a strategy for well-being.

As Urban Farmers and stewards of safe, healing, nourishing and food growing spaces we are committed to being peacekeepers and bringing hope to all our neighborhoods in Chicago.
